Looking back on my time at OLR, I am deeply grateful for how it shaped my mindset and opened my eyes to the world beyond the classroom. I was also fortunate to form lifelong friendship with classmates and even some teachers. In fact, my Social Studies and English teacher, Ms Eleanor Fok is now my godmother, and Sister Marble Chan is my spiritual mentor. The peaceful, unique, and close-knit environment of Yau Yat Chuen remains a cherished memory from my youth.
OLR nurtured in me a spirit of curiosity and a desire to explore beyond the borders of Hong Kong. The relatively open and encouraging culture fostered my thinking and inspiration. I still remember our morning prayers. We didn’t just pray for ourselves or our immediate concerns, but we also often prayed for the world. One moment that stayed with me was when we prayed for the victims of the Challenger space shuttle disaster in 1986. That experience left a deep impression on me as a student, reminding me that we are part of a larger global community.
The school's emphasis on looking outward, rather than focusing solely on public examinations or achievements, helped spark my ambition to study and work in an international environment. I was eager to understand different cultures and people, and that desire led me to pursue higher education in the United States and, later, career development in regional and global settings.
Much of the confidence and global perspective I carry with me today was rooted in the values and experiences I gained at OLR. I was also lucky to make wonderful friends during my time there, and many of us are still in close contact, travelling together and supporting one another over the years.
